With the financial support of the British Council and the Belgian Foundation for Talent, soprano Sophie Karthäuser completed her studies with Noelle Barker at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
After her first Barbarina at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie she was heard in the same house in “L’Enfant et les Sortilèges” under the direction of Marcello Viotti as well as in Monteverdi’s “L’Orfeo” (La Musica, Euridice and Echo) with René Jacobs, Zerlina in “Don Giovanni” under K. Ono, Hanako in Hosokawa’s world creation “Hanjo” and Pamina in “Die Zauberflöte” under René Jacobs.
She sang Pamina in Lille, Serpetta in Berlin, Tamiri at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, Paris and with the Akademie fur Alte Musiek Berlin she sang in “Ludovicus Pius” (Schürmann).
Her future projects include her debut as Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro at the Lyon National Opera under William Christie. She will also sing her first Nanetta (Falstaff) and Aéglé in Lully’s “Thésée” under Emmanuelle Haïm at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées – Paris. She will come back as Susanna in Strasbourg and at the Festival de Beaune. She will make her debut as Ilia in “Idomeneo” at the Opéra National du Rhin and at the Festival of Aix-en-Provence under Marc Minkowski.
In concert she performes a.o. with Sir Neville Marriner, William Christie, René Jacobs, Armin Jordan, Riccardo Chailly, Christian Zacharias, Thomas Hengelbrock etc.
Sophie’s recording of Gretry arias received some very warm reviews from the international press, including a “diapason découverte” from the french magazine Diapason. Projects include Haydn’s “Il Ritorno di Tobia” under Andrea Spering, the integral of Mozart Melodies with baritone Stephan Loges and a CD of Mozart opera arias with the Orchestra of La Monnaie and Kazushi Ono. She will also record Die Schopfung under William Chritie for Virgin.

Sophie received the prize of the audience at the Wigmore Hall competition, one of the most important song contests.
